How to create a bucket on Cloud Object Storage Powered by Wasabi
Important notes
- You can have a maximum of one thousand (1000) buckets per account.
- Individual objects stored in Wasabi can range in size from a minimum of zero (0) bytes to a maximum of five (5) terabytes (TB).
- Any time you enable versioning, you are essentially creating new versions of the objects you are storing. This will result in an increase in your storage usage.
- Bucket logging will be creating log files for all bucket activity. These log files also count towards your storage usage.
- Using the Object Locking feature on buckets, if the retention time is updated, it will be applied on newly uploaded objects only. Not on existing objects.
- With compliance mode enabled, all versions of your files will be saved and added to your total data storage.
- Use the compliance feature cautiously. Inappropriate use of this feature will restrict your ability to delete storage buckets and associated files, which will result in storage charges for these objects.
- There is no limit of objects in buckets.
- A bucket cannot be moved from one region to another. However, you could copy the data to a new bucket and then remove the original bucket.
Procedure
To create your first bucket or additional buckets, please follow the steps below.
- Log in to the Wasabi console using your credentials (using the root account or a sub-user with Administrator Access).
- Go into the Buckets section and click on CREATE BUCKET.
You may see the screen below if you do not have any buckets yet.
- On the new window, enter the desired bucket name and select the desired region for the bucket. In this example, the chosen name is backup.shorttermretention.uswest1 and the chosen region is us-west-1
The Quick Setup option will appear if buckets are already in place. You can use it to copy settings from an existing bucket to the new bucket you are creating.
Then, click on NEXT. - Then, you can choose to enable some optional settings per your requirements. Then, click on NEXT.
Notes:
- Bucket Logging and Bucket Versioning settings can be enabled or disabled later on existing buckets. However, Bucket Versioning cannot be disabled when Object Locking is enabled.
Bucket Versioning is a way to maintain multiple variations of an object in the same bucket. When Bucket Versioning is enabled, you can then retrieve and restore any version of an object in the bucket. This provides protection against inadvertent removal of an object (such as by overwriting or expiration).
- Object Locking can only be enabled while creating the bucket.
Object Locking can help prevent objects from being deleted or overwritten for a fixed amount of time or indefinitely. Objects placed in a bucket with Object Locking enabled are subject to retention modes set at the bucket or object level. Before enabling this feature, Bucket Versioning must be enabled on a bucket. Then, Object Locking can be enabled.
- Bucket Logging and Bucket Versioning settings can be enabled or disabled later on existing buckets. However, Bucket Versioning cannot be disabled when Object Locking is enabled.
- Review the bucket name and chosen settings.
Then, click on CREATE BUCKET. - OPTIONAL – Folder creation
Identify the bucket you created from the bucket list or use the search field if you have many buckets.
Click on the bucket name.
Click on CREATE FOLDER.
Enter a folder name and click on CREATE FOLDER.
Repeat for more folders to create if needed.
Object Locking - Default Settings and Compliance
If Object Locking was enabled when creating the bucket, the OBJECT LOCKING tab will be displayed on the settings page for the bucket.
Note: Updating the retention time will be applied on newly uploaded objects only. Not on existing objects.
