Many of the above devices used to be set up with an Analog phone line in order to communicate with the central server via a modem connection. Analog Modem transmissions using VoIP have known limitations. They are very sensitive to the packet loss and compression that may occur when data is transmitted through various public telephone and internet networks and are therefore not recommended.

Payment machines and stamp machines can be upgraded to use an internet connection instead of an analog phone line. Not only does this mean the phone line can be cancelled, it also means that payments will get processed much quicker as there is no need to dial-in to the server for every transaction.

Alarm Systems can be connected to the central via a cellular (mobile) connection. Contact your alarm system provider to ask about this: it is usually less expensive than the cost of the phone line currently in use.
