Performance Cloud VMware – How to delete a virtual machine and a vApp 


Requirements:

  • To delete a virtual machine running Windows, the virtual machine must be part of a vApp.

            If the virtual machine was not created using a vApp, you may get the error below after trying to delete the virtual                     machine:




Follow steps in the next section to create a temporary vApp.
 

  • If applicable, inform Sherweb to remove Managed Cloud / NOC services to disable the antivirus, monitoring, and patching tools on the virtual machine before its removal. 

Create a temporary vApp for a standalone virtual machine
Follow steps in this section to create a temporary vApp if necessary. If not, skip this section.

  1. Login to the Performance Cloud VMware portal using your credentials.

  2. Select your virtual datacenter.

     
  3. Under the Compute section, click on Virtual Machines.

  4. Select your virtual machine, click on ACTIONS and select Convert to vApp.
     
     
     
  5. Then, let the auto-generated name for the new vApp and click on SAVE.


Delete a virtual machine (VM part of a vApp)

  1. Login to the Performance Cloud VMware portal using your credentials.

  2. Select your virtual datacenter.



  3. Under the Compute section, click on Virtual Machines.

    Then, identify the virtual machine to delete, click on ACTIONS, Power > Power Off
     
    (as the VM will be deleted, there is no need to gracefully shut down the Guest OS)

     
     
  4. Once the virtual machine to delete is stopped, click on ACTIONS, then Delete.

     

Delete an empty vApp

  1. Under the Compute section, click on vApps

    If the vApp contains 0 VMs, the vApp can also be deleted.



  2. On the empty vApp to delete, click on ACTIONS, Power > Power Off
     


     
  3. Once the vApp to delete is stopped, click on ACTIONS, then Delete.

     

Backups cleanup

If backup job(s) are in place for a deleted virtual machine, you may get an error like this one when running them:


Some options are available to avoid receiving errors. According to your needs, you can delete backup job(s) (and optionally delete the backup data too), disable backup job(s), modify backup job(s) to remove the deleted virtual machine.
