Description

This article will guide you to add a new disk or resize an actual disk on a virtual machine.

Important Notes

• Please make sure to have enough resources in your virtual Data Center before trying to add resources on virtual machines. If needed, add required resources in your account management portal Cumulus.
  
  
• To update the storage type of a disk, please review this article.
  
  
• Please consider the following two (2) items regarding creating disks or increasing the size of virtual hard drives:
  • Reducing the size of a virtual hard disk is not an option available through the portal and requires several complex steps.
    
    
  • Using the full storage quota can cause some features to not work, the inability to add memory to virtual machines, and even the need to add additional storage and backups addons, thereby increasing monthly fees.
    
    It is strongly recommended to limit the use of the storage quota to 80% because all the elements below, in addition to the virtual disks, count against the total storage quota of your virtual data center:
    • Virtual machine templates
    • ISO files
    • Snapshots created manually or automatically by the backup system
    • Virtual machine memory swap files (.vswp file

Procedures

Add a new disk on a virtual machine

1. Login to the Performance Cloud VMware portal using your credentials.
   
   
2. Click on your Virtual Data Center (vDC)
   
   
3. Go into the Virtual Machines section and identify your virtual machine.
   
   
   
   
4. Open the virtual machine details.
   
   
   
   
5. Under the Hardware section, click on Hard Disks, then on EDIT.
   
   
   
   
6. Click on ADD
   Then, set desired values for the new disk and click on SAVE.
   
   Note: Multiple disk policies may be available per chosen options in your account management portal Cumulus.
   
   
   
   
7. Inside the guest operating system, open the disk management tool to initialize the disk and create a volume to start using the new disk.
   
   The screen may differ from the screenshot below depending on the operating system used.
   
   

Resize a disk on a virtual machine

1. Login to the Performance Cloud VMware portal using your credentials.
   
   
2. Go into the Virtual Machines section and identify your virtual machine.
   
   
   
   
3. Open the virtual machine details.
   
   
   
   
4. Under the Hardware section, click on Hard Disks, then on EDIT.
   
   
   
   
5. Increase the disk size as needed and click on SAVE.
   
   
   
   
6. Inside the guest operating system, open the disk management tool to resize volumes on resized disks.
