Description
This article will help you managing resources inside your virtual data centers for Performance Cloud VMware (NSX-T).
Important Notes
- Reducing resources in your account management portal Cumulus will only work if resources are not in use. Even if virtual machines are shutdown, resources are considered in use. By trying to set values under the real resources’ usage, this will break the automation process and broken gears will appear in Cumulus.
- Instead of having to deal with a lot of add-ons, you may want to consider switching to another plan in your account management portal Cumulus. To proceed, add the new plan first. Then, remove the old plan.
- Please consider the following two (2) items regarding creating disks or increasing the size of virtual hard drives:
- Reducing the size of a virtual hard disk is not an option available through the portal and requires several complex steps.
- Using the full storage quota can cause some features to not work, the inability to add memory to virtual machines, and even the need to add additional storage addons, thereby increasing monthly fees.
It is strongly recommended to limit the use of the storage quota to 80% because all the elements below, in addition to the virtual disks, count against the total storage quota of your virtual data center:- Virtual machine templates
- ISO files
- Snapshots created manually or automatically by the backup system
- Virtual machine memory swap files (.vswp file)
Procedures
How to review the total CPU usage in the virtual data center
- Login to the Performance Cloud VMware portal using your credentials.
- Click on Data Centers to see the overview for all virtual data centers.
- From there, you will see the current CPU usage vs the total CPU provisioned in your account management portal Cumulus.
In the example below, there are some unassigned CPU (or assigned to shutdown virtual machines).
Unassigned CPUs could be allocated to actual or new virtual machine(s) or unassigned CPUs could be removed from the account management portal Cumulus.
How to change the quantity of assigned CPU on virtual machines
To change the quantity of assigned CPU on virtual machines, please review this article.
How to change the quantity of available CPU in the account
- Go into your account management portal Cumulus.
- Go into the desired organization.
- Click on the Edit icon to change the CPU add-on quantity.
The screen may differ according to enabled services or add-ons in the organization. - Reduce or increase the quantity of CPU Add-ons per your needs or cancel the CPU Add-ons subscription if CPU Add-ons are not required anymore.
- Changes made in your account management portal Cumulus will then be applied in your virtual data center.
How to review the total memory usage in the virtual data center
- Login to the Performance Cloud VMware portal using your credentials.
- Click on Data Centers to see the overview for all virtual data centers.
- From there, you will see the current memory usage vs the total memory provisioned in your account management portal Cumulus.
In the example below, there are some unassigned memory (or assigned to shutdown virtual machines).
Unassigned memory could be allocated to actual or new virtual machine(s) or unassigned memory could be removed from the account management portal Cumulus.
How to change the quantity of assigned memory on virtual machines
To change the quantity of assigned memory on virtual machines, please review this article.
How to change the quantity of available memory in the account
- Go into your account management portal Cumulus.
- Go into the desired organization.
- Click on the Edit icon to change the memory add-on quantity.
The screen may differ according to enabled services or add-ons in the organization. - Reduce or increase the quantity of 2GB RAM Add-ons per your needs or cancel the RAM Add-ons subscription if RAM Add-ons are not required anymore.
- Changes made in your account management portal Cumulus will then be applied in your virtual data center.
How to review the total storage usage in the virtual data center
- Login to the Performance Cloud VMware portal using your credentials.
- Click on Data Centers to see the overview for all virtual data centers.
- From there, you will see the current storage usage vs the total storage provisioned in your account management portal Cumulus.
In the example below, there is some unassigned storage.
Unassigned storage could be allocated to actual or new virtual machine(s) or unassigned storage could be removed from the account management portal Cumulus.
How to view the storage usage per storage type (or policy)
When multiple storage types are enabled, you may want to see the usage per policy.
- Click on your virtual data center
- Under the Storage section, click on Storage Policies.
From there, you will see the current storage usage per policy vs the total storage provisioned in your account management portal Cumulus.
Unassigned storage could be allocated to actual or new virtual machine(s), or unassigned storage could be removed from the account management portal Cumulus.
How to add or resize disks on virtual machines
To add or resize disks on virtual machines, please review this article.
How to change the amount of available storage in the account
- Go into your account management portal Cumulus.
- Go into the desired organization.
- As a requirement to add storage add-ons, backup add-ons must be increased first.
- Click on the Edit icon to change the storage add-on quantity for the desired storage type.
The screen may differ according to enabled services or add-ons in the organization. - Reduce or increase the quantity of storage add-ons per your needs or cancel the storage add-ons subscription if storage add-ons are not required anymore.
- Changes made in your account management portal Cumulus will then be applied in your virtual data center.
How to review the backup storage usage in the virtual data center
- Login to the Performance Cloud VMware portal using your credentials.
- Click on More, then on Data Protection with Veeam
- From there, you will see the current backup storage usage vs the total backup storage provisioned in your account management portal Cumulus.
Note: You must keep enough free backup storage in your virtual data center to ensure backups are executing successfully. Please review this article to understand how the retention policy works for Performance Cloud VMware (NSX-T) and understand how the usage of the backup storage is affected and fluctuates.
How to change the amount of backup storage available in the account
- Go into your account management portal Cumulus.
- Go into the desired organization.
- Click on the Edit icon to change the backup add-on quantity for the desired storage type.
The screen may differ according to enabled services or add-ons in the organization. - Reduce or increase the quantity of backup add-ons per your needs or cancel the backup add-ons subscription if backup add-ons are not required anymore.
- Changes made in your account management portal Cumulus will then be applied in your virtual data center.
